The last match of the season is the popular game between the Sussex Golf Captains and the Sussex Secretaries and Managers, this year kindly hosted by Stephen Blake, Manager of Worthing Golf Club.
The day started with an excellent ‘Full Monty” breakfast where the pairings were announced. Play then got on the way at 9am started by our good friend and County Secretary, Anup Vasant.
The day was overcast but dry and Worthing’s Downland terrain ensured that we remained dry under foot as well.
Three matches were able to start on the 17th which helped getting everone in for lunch in good time.
As the Captain was unfit to play nursing a bad back, Keith Talbot, Vice Captain led the way with Club Captain David Hopkins in match 1. They were playing aginst Stephen Blake from Worthing and his partner (and Professional) Neil Darnell from Royal Ashdown Forest Golf Club. The Captains were successful with a 2 & 1 win.
President Woody and Craig Millyard also prevailed with a 4 & 3 win against Keith Wiley formally of Cooden Beach and Greg Kemsley a late replacement from Hassocks. Match 3 featuring two of our frequent winners, Terry Vanhinsbergh and Mitch Clark battled against the solid pairing of Matt Bolton of Worthing and Lawrence Dennis Smither of Seaford losing 3 & 2. The same could be siad for Richard Cowlard and Dave ‘Santa’ Wilkins who played against Rebecca Prout, East Brighton - soon to be Highwoods (Now with amateur status restored and 4 adjustment shots)! and James Nairn from Crowborough Beacon. Their strong pairing resulted in a 2 & 1 loss for the Captains.
Match 5, Hon Sec Mark Terry and Andy Plowright (a good second row pairing) managed to dovetail well to secure a 2 & 1 win over Pyecombe’s Geoff Wise and Royal Eastbourne’s Toby Anderson. The evergreen John Benoy in match 6 stole the limelight aparently playing with Alan Butcher against ex Pro, Phil Bonsall of PIltdown and recently retired Jacqueline Packham of Willingdon. John played exceptionaly well by all accounts so the Captains won on the 18th one up.
Joe Angella and Brian Street enjoyed a victory over Alan Davey of Pyecombe and Austen Moran formally from Highwoods, winning 3 & 2. Brian offically announced his comeback! Matches 8 and 9 both recorded halves; Harold Knight and Peter Rodger v Matt Warwick (Haywards Heath) and Stuart McConachie (ex Littlehampton) & Andy Lamb & Richard Jays v Paul Taylor (GCMA) and Megan Bibby (West Hove)
The final match with local Captain, Ian Potter and Tarzipan, Peter Ward managed a 3 & 1 win against Shaun Anderson (IPC from Worthing and late stand in) and Martin Yeates from the Dyke.
Final Result Sussex Captains 7 - Secretaries & Managers 3
After an excellent lunch and wine enjoyed purchased by the Secretaries! the team Captains thanked the teams for their participation and looked forward to next year’s match at Royal Ashdown Forest.
Our thanks to Stephen Blake and Worthing Golf Club, Nineteeneth Catering and SCGU Secretary, Anup Vasant.
