Coronavirus Update 3

Monday, 11 May 2020

On behalf of the Committee we sincerely hope that you are coping with the lockdown and staying safe and well. The last eight weeks been a difficult time for everybody and we realise that golf and socialising plays a big part in the physical and mental well-being of our members.

The Prime Minister stated on 10th May that social distancing will remain in place for some time, therefore having a large number of people dining together will be restricted for the foreseeable future, at least until a vaccine is found.
For the Sussex Golf Captains  socialising is just as important as golf at our events so the committee have decided to cancel all events and matches scheduled for June and July. This is inline with England Golf and other Captain’s organisations.

It has been decided to cancel these events and matches rather than reschedule due to the uncertainty of how long the social distancing restrictions will apply plus the availability of dates in our schedule and at our host clubs.  I am also certain that clubs will be prioritising access to the course for their members, wanting to play their own competitions, rather than standing aside for visitors.

Once again, those who have entered The Member’s Invitation, Captain’s Day and President’s Day please let me have your bank details so I can process a refund.  Failing that I can keep your entry fee as a credit against a future event.

Our ultimate goal is to be able to host our flagship event, The Bristow Tankards and Annual Dinner at East Sussex National on 1st October. If social distancing is relaxed in the summer, playing events in August and September will be a bonus.

On a positive note, you will be pleased to know that your Captain, Keith Talbot and President, Dave Wilkins have been asked by the committee to serve a further year in office which they have agreed to do.  Keith was worried that he would be the only Captain of Captains who has never hit a golf ball whilst in office! Their Captain’s & President’s Days will be held next year.

Finally, if you want an interesting read I have used the lockdown time to complete Part 2 of The History of The Sussex Golf Captains.  The first part was written by our 1988 Captain, Derek Ellis of Haywards Heath Golf Club to mark our 25th year.
It has always been our intention to complete a second part after the 50th anniversary celebrations in 2014.  This has now been completed and has been posted on the website.  Look under the ‘History’ tab.

Most importantly stay safe and well.
