A message from the Captain

Saturday, 2 October 2021

After 11 years as Secretary to the Sussex Golf Captains, Mark Terry has decided to step down at the next AGM. He has personal projects he wishes to pursue and feels the time is right to step away. Mark has completely transformed the role during his time, enabling us to be professional in every aspect. This is never better evidenced than the fact that next year’s programme is fully in place.

Mark has done a superb job as our Secretary throughout his tenure and will be a tough act to follow. He has offered to oversee the transition to a new regime, so the Committee feel now is the time to change the structure. It is envisaged that the numerous functions Mark has undertaken will be split up, with Committee members predominantly undertaking the responsibilities

The 2022 AGM will also mark the retirement of David Harmer as Match Secretary. David has carried out this role for 21 years, always ensuring we had a team on every occasion. His sense of fairness meant everyone received equal treatment when he made his team selection. This often involved making numerous phone calls and emails, often having to fill gaps at short notice.

The Committee are pleased to report that Phil Williamson has agreed to take over, so we wish him every success in the role.

Both Mark and David have brought their considerable knowledge and experience to successive SGC Captains; their advice often being sought and greatly valued.

Clearly 2022 will see Sussex Golf Captains enter a new era but no doubt we will rise to the challenge. On behalf of all our Members, I would like to extend to Mark (and Nikki) and David (and Jane) our very best wishes for the future.

Keith Talbot
