Cambridgeshire v Sussex at The Cambridgeshire 2021

Wednesday, 21 July 2021

The Merry 16 of Sussex wound their way to the Cambridgeshire Golf Club on 20th July 2021. The journey was mainly free flowing and all were there in plenty of time, all bar one - but more of that later. The clubhouse being part of the Best Western Hotel was used for the light lunch and evening meal afterwards. After lunch the Captain’s read out the pairings and battle commenced at 1.00pm.

Match 1 - Hurray! Captain Keith has won his first game of the year. During the thunder and rain it was clear Keith was apprehensive but still managed to out drive Mitch on most holes. Close game being all square at the last and then Keith sank a 40-footer to win the match;

Won 1 up

Match 2 - What a start by Peter Ward and David Balfour - 3 up after 3 holes. Despite the height advantage held by the Cambridge pair our two ran out winners 5&3.

Match 3 - Mark Terry and ‘big’ Andy Plowright started by putting both balls in the water hazard on hole one but then got to 4 up by the turn and then on to 6up. However, the opposition then had 3 gross 3’s but our pair then saw off this challenge to win 4&3.

Match 4 - The rearranged pairing of Peter Brookshaw and Peter Rodger struggled on the front nine to be 2 down. Apparently, Peter B then turned his game around and pulled it back to win 1 up.

Match 5 - A sorry start to this pair as Woodie started the journey, got pinged by the covid App and had to turn round and go home. Hence the change of pairing as our President David ’Santa’ Wilkins volunteered to play on his own. When the thunder and rain came all three players decided to call it a day with Santa losing 3&9!

Match 6 - David Sinden and Bryan Fairbrass had some advantage with Bryan receiving 13 shots. He then played very well and the pair won 5&3.

Match 7 - Ian ‘Harry ’ Potter was lucky to get Terry Vanhinsbergh as his partner , despite Terry having to give a lot of shots. Started well to 2 up and then pulled back and then back to 2 up at the turn. Then Terry really turned it on and beat the opposition into the ground to win 4&2.

Match 8 - We all thought this was going to be a one-man team, due to ‘Del Boy’ getting lost between his hotel and the course taking 1½ hours to do 2 miles. However, he ran onto the tee just as Andy Lamb and the others were teeing off. Apparently, the stress was too much for Derek May and they finally ran out losing 3&2.

A nice chicken pie meal with cheesecake followed the golf. During the speeches after the meal Keith was delighted to declare Sussex as winners 6 - 2 and received the trophy from the Cambridge Captain, Malcolm Knobel Forbes. After that most of the team went home, Derek to his exclusive Hotel and the other 5 staying overnight at the Best Western.
