Oxfordshire v Sussex at Badgemore Park 2021

Tuesday, 28 September 2021

Despite the panic of the previous days over the petrol shortage all the team arrived at Badgemore Park, although some filled up on the way there and some were looking to fill up on the way home. The captains’ read out the pairings and we then sat in our fourballs for the sandwich lunch before battle was due to commence at 1.00pm.

Game 1 - Led out by Captain Keith and the ever-dependable Rod England, but for 6 holes Keith did not feature, they took the lead but were pegged back by the turn. On the back nine our boys edged ahead and held on to win 2 & 1. Keith’s comment was “well done Rod” so you wonder if he was on his own for most of the game! Win 2 & 1

Game 2 - Peter Ward and Des Malcolm were pitched against a home player who had been club champion 3 times so found it difficult to live with the Oxford pair. They managed to get to the turn all square but then the home pair pulled away to win . Loss 3 & 2

Game 3 - ‘Harry’ Potter and Peter Brookshaw started well to go 2 up but were pegged back by the turn. Too many mistakes by our two and the Oxford pair playing better enabled them to go dormy 3 up, Harry won the 16th but Peter only halved the 17th in par to lose the match. Loss 2 & 1

Game 4 - Andy Plowright’s comments like “the walk with ‘Santa’ Wilkins was wonderful” and they liked the course and company seemed to sum up this game. Andy and Santa got to 3 up but were pegged back to one by the 16th. Then Santa struck on the 17th with a 3 net 2 to win the game. Win 2 & 1

Game 5 - Mitch Clark and new boy Phil Boole only commented on the good company, marvelous fun, and perfect gentlemen - but not playing golf. Must have been close as they only won on the last. Win 1 up

Game 6 - Richard Jays and ‘Woody’ had a close game with our two gelling well. They had nice company and ended up with a half, although Richard did comment his shoulders were aching at the 18th!! Halved

Game 7 - Dave Balfour and Ken Penfold had a close fought and entertaining game between 4 very competitive players. Our pair had 2 putts to square the game on the last green but failed!! Loss 1 down

Game 8 – Vice-Captain Joe and Steve Dillamore had a close battle. Despite giving 23 shots to one player our pair managed to be 2 up with 2 to play, lost the 17th but held on with a half on the last. Joe commented that Steve sunk 4 x 6-foot putts to halve holes to help them win. Won 1 up

Game 9 - Nigel Powell looked after Brian Street in the last game. An enjoyable 4 ball with the Sussex pair edging the front nine but Oxford edging the back nine to finish on the 18theven. Halved

After a very nice chicken dinner and pudding the two Captains’ spoke, and Keith finally advised us of the result. Sussex won 5 - 4
