And we are off!
The Spring Meeting and AGM
Finally, we have completed our first event. April saw Nevill Golf Club host our Spring Meeting and AGM. Over a hundred of our brightest and best, bashed, foozled and whacked their way around the Sussex Countryside.
In testing conditions Andrew Jenner and Stuart Fowlie ran out winners with an impressive 44 points.
1st - Andrew Jenner and Stuart Fowlie with 44 pts
2nd - Paul Warley and Nigel Wood with 43 pts
3rd - Peter Mead and Alan Stokes with 42 pts
Unfortunately our 2021 Captain, Keith Talbot, couldn’t join us. We would like to thank him for everything that he has done over the last two years, and wish him well in his recovery.
We were able to welcome in the 2022 Captain, Joe Angella, with Ian Potter as his Vice Captain. Ian Jaggard took over from David Wilkins as President.
Dave Harmer, who remains Patron, was also unable to attend. We would like to wish him well for the future and we hope to see him at Crowborough Beacon for Patron’s Day.
Sadly, we also said goodbye to Mark Terry as Secretary, he is already sorely missed. We would like to wish him good luck for his tenure as Captain of Seaford Golf Club.
Joe, Mark and Ian looking into the sun
While we are in welcoming mode, we would also like to welcome all those new Captains who are joining Sussex Golf Captains. Many ties were presented and hands shaken. We look forward to playing with you over the course of the summer.
We would also like to thank Nigel Wates, Ian Jaggard, John Benoy and Guy Sankey for their efforts in organising the day.
The Spring Mixed at Highwoods
Up next is the Spring Mixed at Highwoods on the 28th of April. It will be a pleasure to play with the ladies…on a lovely golf course.
If you haven’t replied with your menu choices, please do so as soon as possible.
and tips to make things easier
It seems that buggies are at a premium. My advice would be that if you enter a fixture or a match, make sure you book a buggy as soon as possible. If you entered very early, it is worth checking the week before the event that it is still available.
Remember that the Secretary only takes Buggy Bookings for the Bristow Tankards, otherwise it is up to you.
If you pull out of an event, don’t forget to cancel your buggy booking.
Following the latest committee meeting we are making a small alteration to the order process for those with dietary requirements.
When we book a fixture, we agree a standard menu and price. It is impractical for us to arrange an alternative meal for all those with dietary variations.
Therefore, we are asking that you personally contact the venue to discuss your requirements. They will be best placed to advise you of alternative options and this will prevent any unfortunate mix ups.
The venue should be able to manage your requirements and offer you an alternative similar in value and standard to the main meal.
Please check your start sheets regularly. Where we have drop outs, we need to fill in and move people around, this means that your starting time may change significantly. The start sheets are posted on the website. Follow the Big Blue Button to see the latest. They have a version number at the bottom, this will tell you if it has been altered since you last looked at it.
The first team selections are going out by email. We have already sent out notices for the Somerset and Hampshire matches. In the event that a Captain declines to join in, we will then email the reserves. Phil wants to ensure that everyone has a chance to play.
When you get your email, you will see two Big Blue Buttons (as shown below), these ask you to confirm your availability. When you hit the correct one, this will open an email window that will ask you to send an email to Phil. Simples.
In the event that you need to pull out, simply send Phil a separate email.
Paying for Matches
When you accept the selection, please pay the £45 match fee into our account, using the payment reference of the County we are playing against.
For Example if you are playing against Somerset, the payment reference should simply read Somerset.
You do not need to include your name or any other reference.
Sadly, Tony Bauckham is standing down from the committee. As many of you know, his persistent shoulder injury has hampered his ability to play golf. He feels that the he would not be able to participate fully were he to become Captain and this is not in the best interests of Sussex Captains. So, he has taken the brave decision to stand down.
The committee would like to thank Tony for everything that he has done over the last few years and wish him well for the future.
As this has created a vacancy on the committee, we are pleased to announce that Andy Plowright has agreed to join us.
We are sad to report the passing of Ian Fraser. He was a long standing member of Ifield and a great supporter of Sussex Captains.
In the event that any friends of Ian wish to attend the funeral, the details are as follows.
Mr Ian Fraser
Surrey & Sussex Crematorium
Friday 6th May at 2 pm
This will be followed by a wake at Ifield Golf Club.
