Officially recorded as the hottest day of the year and possibly breaking previous heat records, President’s Day at Copthorne Golf Club was going to be a challenge.
87 players set off for the Singles Stableford on a course looking very inviting in the summer sunshine.
President Ian Wood was a welcome sight for many serving cold drinks at the halfway point and the General Manager had also very thoughtfully placed water stations at various intervals around the course.
A small number of players came in early as they could not stand the heat (temperature not golf) but otherwise a fine effort from all the Captains who battled on to complete the round in the 36º heat.
The winner with an impressive 46 points was Peter Rodger from West Hove. Peter shot level par off 10 handicap and said it was all about putting!
Runner up was Mick Stacey from Cottesmore with 40 points.
Third: Trevor Pigram also from Cottesmore with 38 points (21 back 9)
Fourth: Mark Dunn (Past Captain of Sweetwoods now plays at Highwoods) also with 38 points (16 back 9)
Fifth was local man John Winslet with 37 points.
