Sussex v Kent at Royal Eastbourne

Frank Horner, Past Captain of REGC very kindly started us at Royal Eastbourne on a lovely day with a light breeze for the eagerly awaited match versus Kent Captains.

A long history of friendship between the 2 sides was quickly forgotten as

the banter died down and the matches got underway.

Captain Phil and Peter the Captain of Royal Eastbourne got us away. 2 down after 7 , Peter saw the disappointment on Phil’s face and decided it was time to up the ante turning things around to record a win 2/1.

Match 2 saw Terry and Brian race into a 3-hole lead but their putting

deserted them and Kent’s chipping prowess brought the game level but

a birdie par finish sealed it for Sussex 1 up.

And so, to match 3 with Keith and Bill after a halved 1st hole Sussex went into overdrive winning 7/6 despite the early loss the Kent pair kept the banter up to the end . Keith was round in 3 over par and had to endure the usual sombrero comments.

Fourth out were Harold and Dave who fought valiantly narrowly losing by 1 hole to the Kent pair apparently Mike hasn't lost a ball for 5 years!

Next in match 5 was the 2 Dave’s Dave and David, Kent were 2 over gross off 15 and 17 handicap despite this only narrowly lost out 2 and 1.

Game 6 saw paired for the first time together the President and Nigel.

Their opponents Brad and Steve were introduced before the match by Kent as a Win to Kent ! . Ian and Nigel saw that as red rag to a bull

and won 1 up on the 18th !

Match 7 saw Bryan and Alan go 3 down early on suffering from the

wind but fought back well Bryan using his shots well to register a

3 and 1 Win for Sussex.

Sussex repeated the feat in match 8 with Rod and Simon coming from 3 down to win 2 and 1 as Rod the God tuned it on .

Tony and Richard were the penultimate pairing and cruised to a 2-up victory.

The final Sussex pairing of David and Chris managed to half 7 of the first 9 holes but tired towards the end of the game and slid to a 3 and 2 defeat.

So, the overall result was a 7-3 win for Sussex .  Despite the loss Kent were gracious in defeat and an excellent meal was enjoyed by all afterwards. Both Captains praised the course and the food and service provided by the host club.
