Captain’s Day at Brighton & Hove

Nigel Wates with Sussex Golf Captains Captain, Peter Ward

A cool breezy but bright day greeted everyone for Captain’s Day this year held at Peter Ward’s home club, Brighton & Hove. A club where one of the founder members of the Sussex Golf Captains, Harry Sayers was Captain.

Boasting the oldest club in Sussex (1887) it enjoys far reaching views on top of the Downs.  Being a 9-hole course participants were required to play nine holes and then stop to enjoy the Captain’s hospitality which included a bacon roll and a glass of Pimms.

The break lengthened somewhat with many groups enjoying two glasses meaning the restart time was being pushed further back!  Not a problem as the weather was kind and most enjoyed the chance to have a break in what was described by many as difficult conditions.

The scores returned were lower than expected but some managed to grasp the breeze, downland bounces and slick greens easier than others.

The winner was Nigel Wates of The Nevill with 37 points.

Runner Up: Nigel Powell (Cottesmore) 35 points

Third: Paul Cleverley (Copthorne) 34 points

Fourth: John Mitchell (Brighton & Hove) 34 points
