Queen’s Jubilee at The Nevill

IMG 1921

This competition is held annually features teams of eight from Bedfordshire, Essex, Hampshire, Kent, London, Oxfordshire & Sussex Golf Captains.

Initially started in 1977 it has grown to be one of the important fixtures of the Golf Captains organisations.

This year Sussex were hosts courtesy of The Nevill Golf Club.

After a bit of reorganising due to half of the London team being held up on the M25, play got on the way at 1pm after a Ploughman’s Lunch. The teams were welcomed at lunch by Nevill Club Captain, Andrew Newman.

Heavy rain also dampened the first nine holes with the greens quickly becoming flooded.  However, after a 20 minute break halfway the Hon Sec decided play should continue and as expected greens drained quickly and the skies slowly began to brighten.

The winning team were the London Captains with 178 (pictured above with SGC Captain, Peter Ward)

2nd Kent 170 points

3rd Essex 168 points

4th Bedfordshire 160 points

5th Sussex 156 points

6th Oxfordshire 152 points

7th Hampshire 149 points

The best individual score went to London Captain Phil Dowson of Fulwell Golf Club with 33 points.

After a superb dinner John Murray, London Captain explained during his acceptance speech that the original Trophy had been mislaid and a replacement is being sourced.  Hopefully this will be available in time for the 2019 fixture hosted by Hampshire at Stoneham on August 15th next year.

Our thanks go to Nevill Golf Club for hosting this event and to our Starters John Benoy and Dave ‘Santa’ Wilkins.  Cards were checked by Dave Harmer and Mark Terry assisted by Essex Secretary, Peter Freeman.
