Surrey v Sussex at Puttenham 2019

IMG 0598

Phil and his merry men travelled to Puttenham in Surrey for one of our nearer away games. The reception was excellent with a free bar followed by Ham,Egg and Chips preceded by the announcement of the pairs by both Captains. Games 6 to 10 had to walk quite a way to the 10th, which proved to be very telling for our last pair.

Captain Phil and immediate Past Captain Peter Ward led us out with a great start, 3 up after 4, then proceeded to lose the next 2 holes. Close fought match after that, with two really "nice guys", but none the less our pair pulled off a 3 and 1 win on the 17th hole.

Second up were President " Woody' and Ian (Harry) Potter. Woody stated the game was played in good spirit and friendship  with our pair managing to repeat lunch, i.e. 'Ham and Egg it' A half on 16 gave the 'Ian's' a 3 and 2 win.

Our 3rd pair, as described by them ' young Brian and 2 metre Andy Plowright' ( I can understand the 2 metre description but young Brian!!!) started like a train:- Par, Birdie, Birdie but were overtaken to be 1 down at the turn. Comment was made by our two that the Surrey Secretary Eddie may have been a 'highway man' in the past and thus proved correct with Surrey winning 3 and 2.

Nigel Evans and Mike Grindell got off to a great start with Nigel sinking putts from 'everywhere' and were 3 up. However Surrey gradually pulled it back and with a birdie, par finish ran out winners 1 up.

Our 5th pair of the Vice, Keith Talbot, and Terry Vanhinsbergh had a birdie blitz on the first 4 holes but then settled into a close fought game. Our pair were 2 up at the turn and with 'steady'  Terry and 'variable' Keith hang on to clinch a 2 and 1 win.

The next 5 games were off the 10th to start, quite a long walk there and back adding to the long walks between green and tee made the games strenuous to say the least.

However the 6th pair, Alan Butcher and Steve Tellyn, a very late replacement, started well with birdies on the first 3 holes. Steve commented that Alan ' played out of his skin ' and coached Steve to improve his game. This was evidenced by a 5 and 4 win.

7th pair out were Andy Lamb and John Kinnear who started quickly to go 3 up immediately and were 5 up at the turn  However the Surrey pair then started to play well and got it back to 2 by the 15th. A nice par on 16 was enough to win the hole and the match 3 and 2.

Match 8 featured Steve Tigg and Gary Hann in a close fought match with never more than 2 holes in it. Gary commented that Steve finished ' strongly ' and they ended up 2 and 1 winners

Game 9 with Nigel Land and Tom Hutchinson was even closer with never more than 1 in it up to the 14th. From then in our pair won 3 out of 4 holes to clinch victory 3 and 1.

In the intro I mentioned the long walk affecting our last pair of Chris Adamson and Colin Prior. This showed when they got back to the clubhouse looking completely knackered. They led after 3 holes but from then on in it was downhill ( or perhaps uphill) to end with a 4 and 3 loss.

FINAL RESULT  :   SURREY  3  -  SUSSEX   7

After play the usual casual drink and then a splendid 3 course dinner was enjoyed by all. It was getting late so the speeches were short with Phil finishing with a big grin on his face as he related the overall score.
