Sussex v Hampshire at The Dyke

hole-8

Perfect weather greeted both teams on our arrival at the Dyke Golf Club. The course was in superb condition played at the right time prior to the rough getting severe. After the initial welcome by Dyke Captain Mervin Allinson, the two Captains announced the day’s pairings, this was followed by a ploughmans lunch. After 2 narrow defeats in our previous fixtures both going to the last match Brian was hoping for a better result.

Match 1 – Sussex Captain Brian Street paired with Dyke Captain, Mervin Allinson against Hampshire Captain Brian Mortimer and President Tony Hoskins. Against a very strong pairing Sussex ended the front nine 4 down with a mountain to climb. But with great determination and Mervin’s new putter, Sussex got to 2 down with 3 to go. Brian then claimed holes 16 and 18 to gain a hard fought half.

Match 2 – Mike Rham and Mike Davis. Nip and tuck all the way never more than 2 holes separating the teams. Sussex eventually succumbed to lose by 2 & 1.

Match 3 – Ken Penfold alongside David Sinden. Ken producing some outstanding golf (apart from losing 2 balls) – he is only human. Hampshire soon became demoralized with the Sussex pair running out victorious by

6 & 4.

Match 4 – Norman Milburn and Richard McArthur. Sussex described the Hampshire pairing as superb company. This was a very close match but eventually Sussex held their nerve to the end winning 1 up.

Match 5 – Tim Ingram and partner Simon Watts. The Hampshire duo came out of the blocks very fast leading by 4 after 5 holes. Things were now looking grim for our boys, but Sussex began to find their game and managed to take the match to the 16th, conceding that the opposition were just too good on the day a loss by 3 & 2.

Match 6 – Peter Rodger with David Noble. With Hampshire losing a player to illness, Dennis Baker from West Hove kindly stood in for Hants, the match was played in great spirit. Peter played his normal solid game, allied with David’s knowledge of the course as a former Dyke member proved too much for the new pairing - Sussex victory by 4 & 3.

Match 7 – David Wilkins alongside John Forster. Dave somewhat jet lagged from his long journey home from the Dorset match the previous day, our boys started with 4 pars only to find themselves 4 down. With gloom descending on Sussex they battled on but to little effect, declaring the Hampshire lads great company but better golfers on the day losing 7 & 5.

Match 8 – Des Malcolm and Reg Auchterlonie, evergreen Reg taking new boy Des under his wing and demonstrating the finer points of the game. The Hampshire pair giving as good as they got and apparently telling some bad jokes on the way - a good win for Sussex by 3 & 2.

Match 9 – John Benoy partnered by Stevie Tigg – John another evergreen stalwart. John started by parring the 1st 2 holes, but Hampshire moved up a gear to be 4 up by the turn. This inspired another Sussex fight back with our lads slowly clawing holes back to finally win on the 18th – 1 up.

Match 10 – Graham Ward and Richard Bevan. Captain Brian, sitting in the club house with baited breath, the 3rd fixture in a row going down to the last pairing - a very even contest eventually resulting in a half.

Match Result – Sussex 5 – Hampshire 5

A great day with the Dyke providing a superb evening meal, Sussex as is our custom supplied the win for the tables.

A big thank you to Dyke Captain, Mervin Allinson, who kindly provided a bottle of water for all the players to take onto the course, then put a bottle of port on every table in the evening (he can come again!)

The Captains complimented the Dyke Golf Club for the wonderful hospitality and hoped to return soon.
