Sussex v Somerset at Worthing

IMG 1820

Sussex entertained the ' tourists ' Somerset on the Lower course at Worthing on a sunny day, with a slight breeze! After a light lunch the teams were announced and, to the consternation of some, the home club IPC advised it would be off the ' whites '.

The home team were led out by 'Tarzipan' Ward and Allan Bell (IPC) of Worthing. A close front nine, only for Sussex to go 1 down at the 9th, with the visiting Captain getting a hole in one. However, Peter and Allan overcame this and proceeded to win on the 17th.    WIN 2/1

Second pair out were Richard Jays and the other Worthing player Ian 'Harry' Potter. All square after 9, with the Somerset boys getting used to the greens. 'Harry' tried to help the opposition by telling them where the bunkers were, only for one of them to find most of them pointed out. Sussex prevailed on the 16th.                                                                 WIN 3/2

Normally in buggies, our 3rd pair decided to walk and enjoy the 'lovely course ' as described by Ian Wood. He and our President, Neil Smith, managed to gain another point on the 16th.

                                                                                                                                    WIN 3/2

Our low handicapper, Alan Butcher' and 'Santa' David Wilkins went out fourth. Alan described the course as difficult but that he and 'Santa' ham and egged it very well. Good company was another comment and the match went to the 18th where Sussex prevailed.

                                                                                                                                   WIN 1up

The IPC, Brian Street, also decided to walk despite playing the day before as well. He and Chris Wise enjoyed the banter and the course, despite it being too long! Chris commented that Brian played well on the Par 3's but nothing about the other 14 holes! However, it was good enough to win on the 18th.                                                                                WIN 1 up

The Cottesmore boys were out next. Both Chris Adamson and Nigel Powell enjoyed the company with a very close match going to the 18th, Chris commented that Nigel played very well and the less said about Chris the better. However, they managed a half.            HALF

The Honorary Secretary, Mark Terry, and David Schwartz had a close front nine and then managed to go 3 down with 5 to play. However, they managed to win 4 of the last 5 holes (I was told an outrageous putt by Mark sealed one of the holes) and they managed to win on the 18th.                                                                                                                             WIN 1 up

Bringing up the rear was Ian Richmond and Steve Tigg who had an enjoyable match. Comment was made on the ' sloppy ' greens, or did they mean slopey greens, had done for the Somerset boys, plus a couple of lucky putts by Ian and Steve. I am not sure the Somerset pair enjoyed it as much as our pair, because Sussex won on the 14th.                       WIN 5/4

Most of the talk in the bar was how fast and difficult the greens were. However, the excellent food managed to turn the conversation to the normal banter and enjoying each other’s company.

A good start to Peter's home matches - Winning 7 1/2  -  ½.
